Korea is the number one in the world when it comes to broadband Internet. According to the Korea Communications Commission, the total number of broadband Internet subscribers in Korea was 15.1 million as of July, 2008. The number is up 620,000 from the same period last year and comprises 95 percent of Korea's total number of households. Korea currently ranks number one among OECD member nations in terms of the number of broadband internet users, speed and monthly fee.
According to a report compiled by the Information Technology and Innovation Foundation earlier this year in May, Korea received 15.92 points and ranked number one with a 93 percent of the nation's total households using broadband Internet service, an average download speed of 49.5 megabytes per second and an average monthly fee of 37 cents per one megabyte per second. Japan ranked higher than Korea in terms of average download speed and average monthly fee but lagged far behind in terms of the total number of broadband Internet users. Finland ranked third while the United States ranked 15th.
